Barely over a week after Ondoy’s devastation in Metro Manila and neighbouring provinces, a new typhoon hit the Philippines — typhoon Pepeng (international codename: Parma) — this time causing havoc to Northern Luzon, including Baguio City, the home of Sayote Republic netizens. We have already received news of UP Baguio alumni and their family who lost their home in the mudslide. Likewise, many of us have families and friends who have been affected by the floods in Pangansinan.

If you have already noticed, the comments system for this blog has been given a fresh new look. On Sep 26, Manila and neighbouring provinces were hit by tropical typhoon Ondoy (international codename Ketsana) causing loss of lives and widespread devastation of property. Filipinos both home and abroad have united in the spirit of bayanihan so provide relief to those affected by this tragedy. And even when the storm has passed, there is still work to be done in helping those pick up the pieces and start lives anew. We’ve compiled a list (especially for the Baguio and UP community) – which will be updated regularly – of where and how you could extend a helping hand. If you are aware of other initiatives, please send an email to admin@sayoterepublic.net. Remember, no amount is too small!

By this time, most people have gone back to the provinces to take a long, well-deserved break. Some, however, would be working and perhaps still checking this blog for news about our beloved alma mater ;-)

It is also perhaps a good time to reflect on the months that passed. For the first quarter of this year, we’ve seen people lose jobs due to the world financial crisis. But as expected, most Filipinos have found ways to cope.

Also, with the presidential elections next year, expect a roller-coaster ride. Just now, we can already see a lot of the presidential hopefuls “campaigning.”
