Sayote Republic contributor and good friend Voltaire Tupaz sent me a copy of this original greeting to be forwarded to our NGO network. I saw it as a good idea to share it. I then sent a copy to our best-selling SR contributor Nars Santos (who happens to be in Baguio) for his comments and editions. Here it goes:

PAYAPANG DAIGDIG

Ang gabi’y payapa
Lahat ay tahimik
Pati mga tala
sa bughaw na langit

Kay hinhin ng hangin,
wari’y umiibig
Sa kapayapaan
ng buong daigdig.

Payapang panahon
Ay diwa ng buhay
Biyaya ng Diyos
Sa sangkatauhan

UP Professor and National Artist Felipe de Leon wrote the haunting melody of this carol the morning after he saw the bombs levelled the City of Manila in 1945.

Amidst the darkness and chaos we face today, may the light of Christmas shine on you.

Before our webhost crosses the International Dateline, the Sayote Republic Team wishes you the best of the Holidays.

  • It is one of my favourite carols and I vividly remember my Tinig days when we use to sing this as a prelude to a show or something.
  • I remember singing this song (for a high school choir) during christmas. i didn't know its history back then. But now this reminder makes this song a classic!
